Open Your Eyes – a sermon by street preacher Dan

Written by:

Hey!

Don’t keep walking.

Just give me one minute.

I’m not asking for your money.

I’m asking for your eyes.

Because you’ve got eyes…

But do you see?

The Scripture says,

“Having eyes, see ye not?”

That’s us.

Eyes open.

Hearts closed.

We look…

but we don’t see.

We hear…

but we don’t listen.

We rush…

but we don’t live.

Look again.

I stopped beside a dandelion this morning.

Just a little yellow flower.

Growing through a crack in the sidewalk.

Concrete said,

“Stay buried.”

The flower answered,

“Not today.”

Winter said,

“Stay buried.”

The flower answered,

“Not today.”

The world said,

“You’re only a weed.”

The flower answered,

“Not today.”

Most people hurried past.

They saw a weed.

God saw a witness.

They saw a nuisance.

God saw persistence.

They saw something to pull up.

God saw something reaching up.

Look again.

You hurry past a puddle.

God paints another sky.

You hurry past a stranger.

God paints another story.

You hurry past a child laughing.

Heaven slips through for just a moment…

and you’re already looking somewhere else.

Slow down.

Slow down.

SLOW DOWN.

The devil doesn’t always make people wicked.

Sometimes he just keeps them busy.

Busy.

Busy.

Busy.

Busy enough to miss the miracles growing at their feet.

Busy enough to miss the face across the street.

Busy enough to miss the whisper because they’re chasing the shout.

Maybe God isn’t absent.

Maybe you’re distracted.

Look again.

Jesus healed blind people.

Sometimes the blindest people were the ones watching.

They saw a beggar.

Jesus saw a brother.

They saw a burden.

Jesus saw beloved.

That’s sight.

Real sight.

Because once you truly see somebody…

you can’t unsee them.

Don’t tell me you love God if you’ve forgotten how to look people in the eye.

Don’t tell me you’ve found heaven while your neighbor stays invisible.

Sight gives birth to mercy.

Mercy gives birth to kindness.

Kindness gives birth to hope.

Look.

Love.

Live.

That’s heaven’s rhythm.

Look.

Love.

Live.

Our problem isn’t weak eyes.

It’s that we are blind to wonder.

I’ve been blind too.

I’ve hurried past miracles because I thought tomorrow mattered more than today.

Then one day the Lord grabbed hold of my heart and cried,

“DAN!

OPEN YOUR EYES!”

Not because you can’t see.

Because you won’t.

There’s a difference.

So tomorrow…

walk slower.

Look longer..

Notice the flower breaking through concrete.

Remember what it said.

The world said,

“Stay buried.”

The flower answered,

“Not today.”

Fear says,

“Stay buried.”

Grace says,

“Not today.”

Can I hear an Amen?

So go on.

Go to work.

Go catch your bus.

Go buy your groceries.

But don’t go blind.

Look again.

When you see a weed…

look again.

When you see a stranger…

look again.

When you see yourself…

look again.

The Kingdom of God isn’t far away.

It isn’t hiding.

It’s waiting in plain sight.

Waiting…

Waiting…

Waiting…

For somebody…

Anybody…

To stop.

To look.

To truly see.

Open your eyes.

Amen.
