An essay on senior discounts

Written by:

Aging, they say, is not for the faint of heart. But, let me tell you, it’s certainly for the bargain-savvy and the humor-appreciative. With each passing year, I find myself increasingly excited not just about the wisdom that comes with age but the unexpected perks—most notably, the senior discounts.

There’s a special kind of thrill in asking for a senior discount. It’s like joining an elite club where the only membership requirement is staying alive long enough to appreciate the value of a dollar saved. Take, for instance, my venture this morning into the world of senior discounts at Starbucks.

I swaggered up to the counter, slapped down my ID and announced, “One senior coffee, please!” The bewildered look on the barista’s face was priceless when she realized I was proud to claim my discount—a whole fifty cents off, mind you!

I didn’t know they had a senior discount for seniors. I will remember next time. 50 cents saved is 50 cents earned!
